Botox Q & A

by Lucia Cagnes, MD

What Is Botox?

Botox is a muscle relaxer that helps to soothe and smooth agitated skin to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles. It's made from a neurotoxin produced by bacteria, meaning it is a completely organic injection.

Botox works its magic by preventing your muscles from receiving signals sent by your nerve cells. Without any instructions on how to move, the muscles become temporarily paralyzed, allowing them to relax.

What Are Some Reasons to Use Botox?

If you're unhappy with the appearance of your skin, Botox is a great way to refresh your face and neck. Botox can lift sagging cheeks, jowls, and skin around the eyes. In particular, it's a great tool for eliminating crow's feet, smoker lines, and forehead lines.

Many people use Botox to reduce the appearance of aging, but it can also be used to treat over 20 different medical conditions.

How Is the Botox Procedure Performed?

Dr. Cagnes will perform your Botox procedure right in the office, meaning you won't have to waste time going to a special clinic or being admitted to the hospital. She will take a highly diluted amount of Botox and inject it directly into the neuromuscular tissue around the areas you want to improve.

The injections themselves only take a few minutes to perform, meaning you can get back to your busy life in no time. You'll begin to see the full effects of the injections in just 24 to 72 hours.

Typical results for Botox can last up to four months, after which you will need another treatment in order to make your wrinkles disappear once more. In rare cases, a person might develop antibodies against Botox, which will render the procedure ineffective. If this happens, Dr. Cagnes will be able to recommend an alternative procedure for your skin issues.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox injections are entirely safe, with very few reported side effects. The only problems you might experience are slight redness or pain at the injection site, but this will quickly clear up after a few days.
